The University of Regina's men's basketball team was defeated 99-66 by No. 2-ranked Alberta on Friday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.
Kenneth Otieno, Jordan Baker, and Sahr Saffa provided the bulk of the offence for the Golden Bears. Otieno led all scorers with 22 points, while Baker added 21 and Saffa scored 18.
Rookie guard
Brandon Tull got the first start of his CIS career and scored a team-high 16 points for the Cougars, who fall to 1-2 on the season with the loss.
The Cougars were the victims of two big runs by the Golden Bears at the end of both the first and the second quarters. The U of R was within one point of Alberta with just over two minutes left in the opening period, but the Golden Bears exploded for a 12-0 run to take a 13-point lead into the second. It was a similar story before halftime, as a three-pointer by Tull brought the Cougars back to within seven but Alberta went on a 10-2 run over the final three minutes of the half to go up by 15 at the break.
The Golden Bears controlled the second half, outscoring Regina 28-22 in the third quarter and running away with it in the fourth. Alberta ended up shooting 11-for-22 from three-point land in the win as the Golden Bears improve to 3-0 on the year.
Travis Sylvestre added 12 points for the Cougars, while
Darius Mole chipped in with seven points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
