The University of Regina's women's basketball team hosts a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series this weekend against the Victoria Vikes at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport on the U of R campus.

Game 1 and Game 2 will tip off at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. If the teams split the first two games of the series, Game 3 will have a 4 p.m. start time on Sunday.

The Vikes were one of just three teams to beat the U of R during conference play this season, as Victoria took a 61-58 home victory over the Cougars back on Jan. 18. Victoria ended up in third place in the Pacific Division with a 16-6 conference record, while the Cougars (19-3) were second in the Prairie Division.

This weekend will mark the third time that Regina and Victoria have met in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series. The Vikes needed three games to defeat the Cougars back in 2003 in Victoria, while the U of R swept Victoria in two games in Regina in 2011. Overall, the Cougars have a 4-3 edge in postseason games and an 11-9 advantage in Canada West games between the two teams.

For the No. 2-ranked Cougars, expect seventh-year head coach Dave Taylor to settle on the starting five he's gone with for much of the season. That includes Michelle Clark and transfer guard Kehlsie Crone in the backcourt with Danielle Schmidt on the wing, Lindsay Ledingham at forward, and Brittany Read at post. Clark is the team's leading scorer with an average of 14.7 points per game, while Read averages 14.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest. Ledingham also averages in double figures for the U of R (12.1 ppg).

Jennilea Coppola leads the U of R off the bench, as she ranked in the top five in the conference in offensive rebounding and had a team-leading 32 blocks despite averaging just 15.5 minutes played per game. Rookie Katie Polischuk and fourth-year forward Megan Chamberlin are also heavily used off the bench, while second-year guard Madi Docherty and second-year forward Alyssia Kajati have also given the Cougars quality minutes this season.

Fifth-year guard Debbie Yeboah is Victoria's leader in both scoring and rebounding. Yeboah, a product of Winnipeg's Sisler HS, ranked second in Canada West with an average of 18.2 points per game during the conference schedule. A good deal of her effectiveness comes from her ability to get to the stripe, and she knows what to do once she gets there – Yeboah's .858 free throw percentage is the best in Canada West.

Jessica Renfrew is Victoria's main threat from the perimeter, as she shoots .391 from three-point range and averages 12.7 points per game. The Vikes, who are ranked No. 10 in this week's CIS Top Ten, come into the series having won 10 of their last 12 conference games and were just one short of second-place UBC in the Pacific Division.

The winner of the series will advance to the Canada West Final Four, which will be hosted at a location to be determined following the conclusion of all four quarterfinals.
