The Lethbridge Pronghorns visit the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport this weekend as the University of Regina's men's basketball team plays at home for the final times this season on Friday and Saturday beginning at 8 p.m. both nights.

This weekend marks the final home games for University of Regina fifth-year players Paul Gareau and Sterling Nostedt, who will both complete their CIS eligibility at the end of the season.

Gareau graduated from Archbishop M.C. O'Neill HS in 2006 and played for the Cougars during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons before taking two years. He returned for the 2010-11 campaign as a starter for the Cougars and immediately established himself as one of the top forwards in the conference, averaging 18.7 points per game as a third-year player. He also led the team in scoring (15.8 ppg) last season and is on a record pace this year, as his .640 field goal percentage not only leads the entire CIS but is also the best single-season effort in University of Regina history.

“Paul in many ways is the glue on this team, and he'll obviously be a huge hole to fill when he leaves,” Cougars head coach James Hillis said. “He shoots at an extremely high percentage, he's a completely unselfish player, and he's a guy that works hard day in and day out and will be sorely missed by this team.”

Nostedt graduated from Neelin HS in Brandon in 2008 and immediately gave the Cougars solid minutes off the bench. He spent parts of the 2010-11 season and most of 2011-12 as a starter, and enters this weekend ranked fourth in University of Regina history with 124 career three-pointers made. Nostedt could advance even further up that list as he's within striking distance of third-place Dale Holmes (129). If he plays in all four of the U of R's remaining games, Nostedt will finish his career tied with former teammates Paul Schubach and Jamal Williams for the most Canada West games played in school history (106).

“Sterling has been a leader both on the court and off the court for us,” Hillis said. “He's been a solid ambassador for our program and has been a threat to score from the perimeter since his first season with the team.”

The Cougars were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention after two road losses to Calgary last weekend, but Lethbridge remains alive in the Prairie Division hunt. The Pronghorns are 9-9 on the season and two games back of fourth-place Calgary (11-7) for the final playoff spot, but will need to pass Winnipeg (11-8) along the way if they hope to snare fourth place in the division.

Lethbridge fifth-year post Derek Waldner enters the weekend as the top rebounder in the conference, as he averages 11.5 boards per game. He also averages exactly 17 points per contest and has piled up a Canada West-leading 11 double-doubles this season. After this weekend, Lethbridge finishes the Canada West slate with a home-and-home against Calgary.

The Cougars close out the 2012-13 season next weekend in Nostedt's hometown, as the U of R will square off with Brandon University next Friday and Saturday.
