The University of Regina's women's basketball team pulled away from visiting UBC Okanagan with a big run late in the first quarter and rolled to an 88-56 win over the Heat on Friday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The Cougars built up a double-digit lead by scoring the last 12 points of the first quarter and cruised to their second big victory in as many nights. They led by 15 at the half and 26 through three quarters en route to their 32-point win, which improves the U of R's conference record to 10-2.
Nicole Clarke hit four of her eight attempts from three-point range and was 9-for-18 from the field overall as the fifth-year guard led all players with 23 points.
Alyssia Kajati added 16 points, while
Janine Guijt scored 15 and
Charlotte Kot matched her career high with 14 points and set a new career best with 14 rebounds as she recorded a big double-double.
Making its first visit to Regina in program history, UBC Okanagan (2-9) was led by Emily Kanester's 17 points. Shenelle Tamminen came off the bench to fall just short of a double-double for the Heat, ending up with 11 points and nine rebounds.
UBC Okanagan will make the short trip east for a Saturday night game at Brandon, while the Cougars will return to the court next Friday and Saturday with a pair of home games against Prairie Division rival Winnipeg.
NOTES: Including their three non-conference wins at the Frontier Conference Shootout in Las Vegas, the Cougars have now won nine consecutive games ... the U of R is now 3-0 all-time against UBC Okanagan.
