The University of Regina's women's basketball team led from wire to wire and set a school record for three-pointers in a 93-67 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night in a Canada West game at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
One night after surviving an upset bid by Winnipeg, the Cougars controlled this one from the outset. They opened up a double-digit lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading by at least seven the rest of the way. The U of R, which took an 18-point lead into halftime, led by as many as 31 points in the third quarter and cruised to victory down the stretch.
The Cougars were brilliant from three-point land all night long, setting a U of R record with 17 triples in the win – the most ever by the Cougars in a Canada West game.
Nicole Clarke led the charge from the perimeter with six three-pointers, while
Kehlsie Crone matched her career high with four and
Madi Docherty added three.
After scoring a season-high 29 points in Friday's win, Clarke ended up with 27 on Saturday to lead all scorers for the second night in a row. Three other Cougars hit double figures in scoring, including
Janine Guijt and Crone with 14 apiece.
Charlotte Kot scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds to notch a double-double for the second time in as many nights.
Both Stephanie Kleysen and Megan Noonan hit the 20-point mark for the Wesmen. Kleysen led Winnipeg in scoring for the fifth straight game with 22 points, while Noonan added 20 points. Skylar Boulanger had six points and a team-high 11 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench for the U of W.
The Cougars (12-2) will be back in action on the road at Manitoba next weekend, while Winnipeg will prepare for a home-and-home with Brandon.
