New coach? No problem for the University of Regina's women's basketball team, which cruised to an 89-59 road victory over Manitoba on Friday in Winnipeg to collect its ninth consecutive Canada West win.
With head coach
Dave Taylor unavailable due to quarantine because of a possible exposure to a virus, assistant Carly Graham made her CIS coaching debut a memorable one as the Cougars led by 11 at the half and pulled away from Manitoba in the third quarter en route to the 30-point win.
Five Cougars hit double figures in points in the win, led by 16 from both
Nicole Clarke and
Janine Guijt. Clarke didn't fall too far short of the elusive triple-double, pulling down nine rebounds and dishing out eight assists in the win.
Kehlsie Crone scored 12, while
Charlotte Kot had 11 points and
Megan Chamberlin added 10. Kot led all players with 12 rebounds to collect her fourth consecutive double-double, leading a Cougar effort on the glass that saw the visitors outrebound Manitoba by a 49-35 margin.
Allison Balasko led Manitoba (3-12) with 11 points.
The win improves Regina's record to 13-2 as the Cougars remain mired in a three-way tie with Alberta and Saskatchewan atop the Prairie Division standings.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.
NOTES: The Cougars have now won 16 consecutive games over Manitoba in a streak that dates back to the 2007-08 season.
