Box Score
The No. 5-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team showed no signs of rust in its first game of the second half of the Canada West schedule, defeating Thompson Rivers by a 99-39 margin on Thursday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The story of the night was pure domination on the glass by the Cougars, as they outrebounded TRU 73-31 in the victory. It's the most rebounds ever recorded by the U of R since they joined Canada West prior to the 2001-02 season, topping the old mark of 68 set against Brandon in 2010-11 and equalled last season in a win over UNBC.
Six Cougars broke into double figures in scoring, led by newcomer
Janine Guijt's game-high 16 points in her first game with the U of R.
Nicole Clarke (15 points),
Megan Chamberlin (13),
Charlotte Kot (12),
Alyssia Kajati (11), and
Katie Polischuk (10) also had at least 10 points, while Kajati had 13 rebounds and Chamberlin pulled down 11 as both ended up with double-doubles.
"Coming out of the break, I was pleased with our effort and how we shot the ball tonight," Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor said. "The team executed three of our four focuses for the game and it was a good start to the second half."
The Cougars took control of this one early, leading 27-7 after a first quarter in which they scored the final 17 points. They led 55-20 at halftime and cruised to victory in the second half, ending the game on a 15-0 run to push the eventual margin of victory to 60.
Ryan Kennedy scored a team-high nine points for Thompson Rivers, which committed just 15 turnovers to Regina's 20 but shot just 14-for-73 from the field in the loss. The WolfPack drop to 6-5 on the season but remain 1½ games up on UNBC for the fourth and final Pacific Division playoff berth. They'll continue the road swing with a game at Brandon (2-8) on Friday night.
Now 9-2 on the season and – for the time being – in sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings, the Cougars will be back in action on Friday night against UBC Okanagan (2-8). Game time is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
