Alex Igual was named a tournament all-star at the RBC Classic hosted by Brock over the weekend in St. Catharines, Ont.
Igual averaged 13.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game over the three games, which saw the Cougars lose two two-point games and finish 0-3 at the non-conference tournament.
The Cougars opened up the tournament against York on Friday, falling 86-84 to the Lions thanks in large part to a 30-point effort from York's Nick Tufegdzich. All five starters hit double digits in points for the Cougars, including
Brandon Tull with a team-high 22 and
Travis Sylvestre with 20 and a team-leading eight rebounds.
On Saturday, the Cougars matched up with a Windsor team that would be ranked No. 5 in the first CIS Top Ten of the season. The Lancers were dominant on the glass and came away with an 84-56 victory led by 20 points from Rotimi Osuntla, Jr.
Mike Malecha came off the bench to lead the Cougars with 16 points, while Igual,
Will Tallman, and Tull each had 11 for the U of R.
The Cougars were then edged 76-74 by tournament host Brock on Sunday. Igual had his finest game of the weekend against the Badgers, going 5-for-10 from three-point range and leading the Cougars in points (20), assists (5), and steals (3) while also pulling down seven rebounds. Tallman added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the loss, with Sylvestre chipping in with 13 points. Yusuf Ali led Brock with 17 points.
The Cougars will now prepare for their Canada West openers next weekend against Victoria. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. (PDT) on Friday night and 7 p.m. (PDT) on Saturday.
