Box Score
The University of Regina's women's basketball team was given all it could handle by the pesky Brandon Bobcats, but a huge fourth quarter pushed the No. 4-ranked Cougars to an 88-63 win at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first three quarters with the lead changing hands 14 times, but the Cougars finally found a way to stop Brandon's Cassie Cooke and finished the third on an 8-0 run to set up their massive fourth. The U of R simply blew Brandon away in the final quarter, outscoring Brandon by a 29-9 margin in the fourth to cruise to the win down the stretch.
The Cougars (20-2) were led by a career-high 22 points by
Madi Docherty (pictured), who also led all players with five assists and pulled down seven rebounds for the U of R. Three other players scored in double figures, including
Jennilea Coppola with 14 points and
Charlotte Kot and
Katie Polischuk with 12 apiece. Kot also had a game-high 11 rebounds for a double-double in just 17 minutes off the bench.
Cooke was on fire for much of the game, hitting six three pointers – a couple of which were from well beyond the three-point arc – and finishing with a game-high 34 points. She also tied Stephanie Haynes for the team high with seven rebounds and led the Bobcats with four assists and three steals.
Brandon finishes the season with a 6-16 record as the Bobcats place sixth in the final Prairie Division standings.
The Cougars will finish second in the Prairie Division if Alberta defeats Saskatchewan later on Saturday night in Edmonton, but will claim first if the Huskies can take out the No. 3-ranked Pandas in Edmonton. They'll host a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series next weekend against a Pacific Division opponent that will be determined by the conclusion of Saturday's games.
The quarterfinal series will be held next Friday, Saturday, and – if a third game is needed – on Sunday at the CKHS. All games will tip off at 7 p.m.
