The wild Prairie Division standings aren't any closer to sorting themselves out as the University of Regina's women's basketball team hosts Calgary this weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Friday's game is a 6:15 p.m. start and Saturday's contest will tip at 5 p.m.
Somewhat incredibly, 16-2 isn't good enough to be all alone in first place in the Prairie Division. That's because the Cougars, Alberta, and Saskatchewan all have just two losses as the teams enter the second last week of the Canada West schedule. Though the Cougars have already played both teams, the uncertainty is compounded by the fact that Alberta and Saskatchewan have yet to meet this season and will close out the conference schedule with two games against each other next weekend in Saskatoon.
As it stands, the Cougars would hold a head-to-head tiebreaker over Saskatchewan but not over Alberta – and the Pandas would also emerge from the group in a scenario that has the three teams still in a knot at the end of the conference schedule, this assuming that No. 3-ranked Alberta can come away with a pair of road wins over 4-14 Manitoba this weekend in Winnipeg.
But the Cougars will have to put all that aside to focus on Calgary, which comes into the weekend with an 11-7 Canada West record which includes a win over Saskatchewan three weekends ago.
The U of R is coming off a critical pair of road wins last weekend, including Friday's 64-62 barnburner over No. 7-ranked Fraser Valley which saw the Cougars seal the win after a late Cascades turnover gave the U of R the ball with only seconds to go. The U of R followed that up the next night with a 97-57 win over Trinity Western, the Cougars' 12th consecutive Canada West victory.
Nicole Clarke, who scored 19 points and added eight assists in the win over UFV and scored 16 against TWU, was named the Canada West Second Star of the Week on Tuesday to earn conference honours for the third time in the last four weeks. Clarke,
Jennilea Coppola,
Kehlsie Crone,
Madi Docherty, and
Charlotte Kot formed the starting five last weekend for acting head coach Carly Graham, while
Katie Polischuk,
Alyssia Kajati, and
Janine Guijt came off the bench in the UFV win. Polischuk's contributions were huge in the victory over the Cascades, scoring 17 points including a triple in the final minute that put the Cougars into the lead for good.
After this weekend, the Cougars will close out the Canada West schedule at home against Brandon.
It's been a bit of an up-and-down season for the Dinos, who started out the season with two road losses before reeling off 10 straight wins. But Calgary enters the weekend on a four-game losing streak, has dropped five of its last six, and finds itself locked in a battle with Winnipeg for the fourth and final postseason spot in the division.
Tamara Jarrett and Kristie Sheils lead Calgary in scoring, as Jarrett averages 13.3 points per game and Sheils scores 11.8 per contest. Jessica Thielen averages 7.9 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per game, while Ashley Hirons and Lawrie Saunders round out the usual starting five for the Dinos.
Calgary finishes the conference slate next weekend with a home-and-home against Lethbridge.
NOTES: The Cougars have an 18-7 advantage over Calgary in the all-time series.
