Box Score

The University of Regina's women's basketball team suffered a 55-50 loss to Alberta on Saturday night in the Canada West third-place game, eliminating any chances of the Cougars snagging the wildcard berth to next weekend's CIS Championship.

The Cougars put together a huge 15-3 run in the fourth quarter to turn what had been Alberta's largest lead of the game into a four-point Regina advantage, but a Janine Guijt bucket with just under two minutes left that put the visitors back in the lead would turn out to be the U of R's final points of the contest. Alberta got a free throw on their next possession to cut the lead to one, then field goals from Andria Carlyon and Sally Hillier gave the Pandas a three-point lead and a turnover on the ensuing Regina possession sealed the win for the U of A.

Saskia Van Ginhoven led Alberta with 16 points, while Hillier came off the bench to collect 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Pandas, who almost certainly will earn a wildcard berth to the CIS Championship with the victory.

Charlotte Kot scored nine points and led all players with a career-high 15 rebounds for the Cougars, while Alyssia Kajati finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Guijt was the U of R's leading scorer for the third time in the last four games and ended up as the only Cougar in double figures in scoring with 12 points.

The Cougars outrebounded Alberta by a 57-40 margin and had 25 offensive boards, but ultimately couldn't overcome a 17-7 advantage in points off turnovers for the Pandas. Neither team shot particularly well in the game, as Alberta was 31% from the field compared to Regina's 24%.

The two teams were tied at 12-12 after the first quarter and Alberta took a slim 24-22 lead into halftime. The Pandas led for all of the third quarter and pushed the lead to eight early in the fourth with a Carlyon layup, leading to Regina's big run which would eventually come up short in the final two minutes.

NOTES: The Cougars fail to advance to the CIS Championship for just the second time since 2008.
