Box Score

The University of Regina women's soccer team came away with a 3-2 victory over the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen in non-conference action at Leibel Field on Thursday morning.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead as rookie forward Olivia Bolen beat Wesmen keeper Taylor Thorkelsson in the 14th minute after a long lead pass from Brianna Wright.

The Cougars added to their lead in the 25th minute as Wright was dragged down in the box by a Wesmen defender. Kayla McDonald stepped to the spot and converted the penalty kick with a well-placed strike to the top left corner.

Winnipeg got on the scoreboard less than a minute later when midfielder Danielle Bulloch forced a turnover deep in Cougar territory. She capitalized and beat goalkeeper Kacey McFee from inside the box to draw Winnipeg within a goal.

Michaud and Racquel Marshall had shots on net before the half but Thorkelsson handled both. The Cougars took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Less than a minute into the second half, Chelsea Kwasnicki took a through ball from Janelle Deniset and slid a low shot past McFee to knot the game at 2.

The game remained tied until the 81st minute when Cougar midfielder Nikita Senko tipped the ball to Veronica Boesch who volleyed what would be the game-winner just inside the left post.

Kwasnicki and Bulloch combined for all eight of Winnipeg's shots in the match, but the Wesmen could not muster a shot on net after Kwasnicki's goal in the 45th minute.

McFee made three saves for Regina. Thorkelsson stopped two shots for the visitors.

The next action for the Cougars is scheduled for Wednesday against St. Francis Xavier in Wolfville, N.S.

Conference play is set to open on Sept. 5 in Winnipeg, against the University of Manitoba Bisons (6:00 CDT).
