SATURDAY: at Victoria Vikes, 5 p.m. (PDT), Victoria, B.C.
The University of Regina women's soccer team is back in action this weekend as the Cougars hit the road for matches against the UBC Thunderbirds and the Victoria Vikes.
The Cougars (1-3-2) are coming off a 1-0 loss to the MacEwan Griffins and a 1-1 tie with Mount Royal University.
Daniela Castro scored the lone goal of the weekend for the Cougars, while
Savannah Williams played both games in net.
UBC sits atop the West division in Canada West with a 6-1-0 record. The Thunderbirds topped UBC Okanagan 2-1 last weekend before disposing of Thompson Rivers 4-0 the following day. UBC is led by Jasmin Dhanda, who has scored four goals so far this season. Olivia de Goede has started all by one game in net for the T-Birds, and has stopped 13 of the 16 shots on net that she has faced.
Victoria leads Canada West with 18 goals scored this season, but sits fourth in the West division with a 4-2-1 record. The Vikes got off to a rough start, but have won four straight games since losing to Trinity Western on Sept. 12. Teresa Anania and Kiara Kilbey have both scored four goals in the young Canada West season, and Emma Greig has chipped in with three goals and four assists.
"The challenge and opportunity to play against quality sides is one that our players are looking forward to. As a team we know that we will have to be very disciplined and organized throughout each match and mentally switched on at all times," head coach
Bob Maltman said.
"We are also firmly aware of the necessity to play with confidence in possession to both create and capitalize upon scoring opportunities."
Castro leads the Cougars with two goals on the season, and
Celia Michaud has also found the net. Shots are not hard to come by for the Cougars, as they have tallied 79 as opposed to the 69 they have surrendered.
Brianna Wright (pictured) leads the way in that department, registering 17 of her own. Behind her are Castro and
Karlee Vorrieter with nine. Of the 79 shots the Cougars have fired towards the net, only 37 have been on target.
Williams has been strong in net in her first year with the Cougars, stopping 23 of the 28 shots she's faced.
