The University of Regina's women's volleyball team was felled in three sets for the second consecutive night by No. 1-ranked UBC Okanagan on Saturday night in Kelowna, B.C.
Â
All three sets followed similar scripts, with the Cougars hanging around until late pushes by UBC Okanagan tilted the match in the Heat's favour. The Cougars forced a UBC Okanagan timeout with an 18-15 lead in the first set, only to have the Heat respond by scoring 10 of the last 13 points of the set to take a 25-21 win.
Â
The Cougars had a 16-14 lead at the media timeout in the second set, but again it was all UBC Okanagan after that, as the Heat closed out the set on an 11-3 run to win 25-19. The third set developed a little differently with the U of R trailing by just a point or two most of the way, but the Cougars fired up three straight points to draw even at 21-21 – but again, UBC Okanagan finished strong by taking each of the next four points, three of which came on Emily Oxland service aces.
Â
Kaitlynn Given finished with a match-high 12 kills for UBC Okanagan, while Oxland had a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.
Â
The Cougars (0-2) were led offensively by second-year right side
Ashlee Sandiford, who had 11 kills on a total of 31 attacks and also added three aces. First-year setter
Satomi Togawa finished with 19 assists and a team-leading six digs, while
Molly Wade-Cummings led the Cougars at the net with four blocks.
Â
The U of R will now prepare for another road weekend, this time at Mount Royal's campus in the southwest quadrant of Calgary. Mount Royal will also come into the weekend with an 0-2 record after starting the Canada West schedule with a pair of four-set losses to MacEwan.
