The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won the first two sets on Friday in a Canada West match at Mount Royal, but couldn't put away the win as MRU won it in five.
The Cougars opened up a 2-0 lead in the match with relative ease, cruising to 25-19 and 25-18 wins in the opening two sets. They hit an impressive .345 as a team in the second set while holding Mount Royal to a zero hitting percentage.
But it was all Mount Royal from there. MRU got back in the match with a 25-20 win in the third set, then forced a deciding set with a tight 25-23 win in the fourth. The fifth set saw the Cougars battle back from a 10-6 deficit with three straight points to get within one, but Mount Royal claimed five of the last six points of the set to complete the comeback.
Three Mount Royal players hit double figures in kills, including Carolina Alongi who registered a match-leading 13. Taylor Pelland and Kylie Willis both chipped in with 11, while Willis added 10 blocks to lead all players at the net and record a double-double. Jenna Smith also had a double-double for Mount Royal with 42 assists and 12 digs.
The Cougars (0-3) were led in kills for the third consecutive match by
Ashlee Sandiford, who finished with nine.
Kristine Ward,
Kyla Payette, and
Tori Glynn each had eight kills apiece, while
Molly Wade-Cummings had seven kills, hit .636, and added eight digs and seven blocks.
Kristine Ward lit it up from the service line with six aces for the Cougars, marking only the third time in history that a U of R player has had at least six in a Canada West match. Glynn has the school single-match record with eight aces, while former setter Tiffany Herman also had six in a match back in 2011-12.
The teams will meet again on Saturday night following the conclusion of the men's match. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
NOTES: Glynn moved past Desiree Ates for seventh place on the U of R's all-time kills list (591).
