The University of Regina women's soccer team closes its regular season schedule this weekend on the road, as the ladies take on the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday and the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday.
The Cougars are still alive in the Canada West East Division playoff race, entering the weekend with a 1-9-2 record and sitting in seventh place. The top six teams in the division will earn a post-season berth, so the Cougars will need at least a win and a draw this weekend. The Cougars are chasing the Lethbridge Pronghorns (2-7-3) and Mount Royal University (2-8-2), so they will need losses from those teams to help clinch a playoff spot.
Leading the Cougars in the offensive zone are
Karlee Vorrieter and
Daniela Castro with two goals apiece.
Celia Michaud (pictured) and rookie defender
Cassie Longmuir have also found the net.
Savannah Williams (pictured) has started eight games in net, stopping 38 shots, while veteran
Kacey McFee has made four appearances and totalled 15 saves.
The Cougars played host to both the Wesmen and Bisons back in September, falling 2-1 in both contests. Castro scored in the loss to Winnipeg to open the Cougars' season, and Michaud scored her second career goal in the game against Manitoba. Regina was later awarded a 1-0 victory over Winnipeg due to an ineligible Wesmen player.
