The University of Regina's women's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to Mount Royal on Saturday night in Calgary.
Â
After dropping the first set by a 25-22 decision, the Cougars looked to be well on their way to squaring the match at 1-1 after opening the second on a 5-0 run that included three consecutive service aces by
Satomi Togawa. But Mount Royal got back into the set with five straight points of its own before the media timeout, took the lead with a quick 4-0 run, and held off the Cougars for a 25-21 win.
Â
Both teams hit zero in the third set, which Mount Royal (2-2) won by a 25-20 margin to clinch the match.
Â
Nicole Smith led Mount Royal with 10 kills and added seven digs, while libero Robyn Potolicki had 13 digs and setter Toni Vandenbrink finished with 20 assists.
Â
Ashlee Sandiford had 10 kills for the Cougars, who fall to 0-4 on the season with the loss. Second-year libero
Taylor Ungar led all players with 16 digs, while Togawa finished with 27 assists, six digs, and three blocks to go along with her three second-set service aces.
Â
The Cougars will host UBC (2-0) next weekend in their home openers at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
