The University of Regina women's hockey team will host two Canada West games this weekend as the UBC Thunderbirds are in town. The teams will square off on Friday and Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.
The Cougars are coming off two losses against the Saskatchewan Huskies, dropping a 5-3 decision in Saskatoon on Friday and then losing 2-1 in double overtime in Regina on Saturday.
Meghan Sherven,
Bailey Braden and
Caitlin Dempsey scored on Friday, while
Emma Waldenberger (pictured) added to her Canada West-leading goal total with her eighth of the season on Saturday.
Rookie forward
Jaycee Magwood notched assists in both games, maintaining the highest assist total in the conference with eight.
"Jaycee certainly makes things happen offensively, she's passing well and the goal scoring will come for her with time," head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "Both Jaycee and Emma are very smart players - Emma is a finisher and she's been capitalizing on her opportunities."
UBC enters the weekend with a 4-3-1-0 record, good enough for third in the conference. Regina sits two points back of UBC at a 3-3-1-1 mark. The Thunderbirds split with the Manitoba Bisons last weekend, winning 2-1 on Friday before falling 4-1 the following afternoon.
Rebecca Unrau, who sits second in the conference in goals and points, leads the T-Birds attack with six goals and three assists through eight games. Kathleen Cahoon has notched four goals and two helpers, and Katie Zinn has two goals and three assists so far this season.
"We'll have to play them tight just like any other team," Hodges added. "Defensively we've been alright but need to be better moving forward."
In net, the Cougars have seen
Toni Ross handle most of the action. The fifth-year goaltender has a 2.09 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage in seven games of work.
Jane Kish will continue to see time in net as well, as she has posted marks of 3.62 and .879 in two appearances.
UBC has relied heavily on Samantha Langford between the pipes. Langford has played all but five minutes and 21 seconds of ice time for the Thunderbirds, registering a 1.42 GAA and a .917 save percentage.
