The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a four-set loss to the Brandon Bobcats on Saturday night as the two teams wrapped up a two-match weekend series at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Brandon (3-3) opened up with a 25-19 win in the opening set. Though the Bobcats trailed 16-15 at the media timeout, the visitors scored 10 of the final 13 points to open up an early lead in the match.
The next three sets all featured familiar plots, with the Cougars jumping out to significant early leads before Brandon mounted comebacks. Brandon took a 25-22 win in the second set after the Cougars scored the first four points, but the third set saw Regina survive a late Brandon run for a 26-24 win after the Cougars led 9-2 at one point early on. The U of R took a 7-2 lead in the fourth, only to see Brandon once again come back – this time, however, the Bobcats completed the comeback and clinched the match with a 25-19 win.
Three Brandon players hit double figures in kills, led by Nikki Majewski with 14 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Shanlee McLennan also had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs, while Regan Dahl added 11 kills and led all players with a .409 hitting percentage. Starting in place of Mary Thomson, who was injured during Friday's match, setter Hope Schneider – sister of University of Regina men's hockey player Mark Schneider – piled up 42 assists and nine digs for the Bobcats. Donata Huebert tied for the match high with 16 digs.
Regina (0-8) also had three players in double figures for kills, including Shayna Godlien (pictured) with a team-leading 13. Godlien also had 11 digs for one of Regina's two double-doubles –
Ashlee Sandiford had the other, compiling 12 kills and 10 digs.
Molly Wade-Cummings added 10 kills and hit .292 for the Cougars, while
Tori Glynn put down nine kills and tied Huebert for the match lead with 16 digs.
The Cougars had a surprise starter in the lineup, as rookie
Brooke Mothe had yet to see the court in a Canada West game but got the call at libero with
Taylor Ungar battling illness. Mothe finished with 14 digs and received 31 serves for the Cougars.
Both of these teams will be on the road next weekend. The Cougars will prepare for a trip to the West Coast to face Trinity Western, while Brandon will also head west for a couple of matches against Thompson Rivers.
