Kylie Gavelin led the charge as the University of Regina women's hockey team came back from a 3-1 deficit to claim a 4-3 double overtime victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday night, keeping the Cougars' season alive.
Gavelin was involved with all four goals for the Cougars, scoring three and assisting on the other.
The win forces a third and deciding Game 3, which will be played on Sunday night at 7 p.m. in Winnipeg.
Carleen Meszaros scored the first goal for the Cougars, which came early in the second and tied the game up after Alanna Sharman scored for the Bisons in the first period.
Lauryn Keen would score again to put Manitoba back on top after the season period, and Alana Serhan scored the Bisons' third powerplay goal of the game midway through the third to give the home team a 3-1 lead.
Gavelin netted her first of the game with 6:51 left in the third period, as she tipped in an
Alexis Larson shot to bring the Cougars within a goal. The Cougars would continue to press, but it came down to the last minute of regulation. Regina pulled
Toni Ross for an extra attacker and it paid off, as Gavelin beat Rachel Dyck with 27 seconds on the clock, tying the game 3-3.
The first overtime saw powerplay opportunities for both teams, but the goaltending was strong and neither team could capitalize. Double overtime would be needed, and it didn't take long for the Cougars to strike. Gavelin took a pass from Larson and put a shot on net from a sharp angle. The puck bounced off the side of the goaltender and in, completing the comeback and forcing a third game in the Canada West quarterfinal series.
Ross was exceptional in net, making 38 saves for the win. Dyck was just as impressive, as she kept out 31 shots for the Bisons.
