Emma Waldenberger scored the only goal of the game and
Toni Ross stopped all 30 shots she faced as the University of Regina's women's hockey team took a 1-0 road win over Lethbridge on Friday night.
Waldenberger scored with just three minutes left in the opening period. She took a pass behind the Lethbridge defence, fought off a check, and deked to the backhand to notch her team-leading 10th goal of the Canada West schedule.
And Ross did the rest. She turned aside 27 shots in the first two periods alone, and the stingy Cougar defence allowed just three Lethbridge shots in the third.
"Toni was especially good during the multiple 5-on-3 opportunities that we had to kill off," Cougars head coach
Sarah Hodges said. "She made two or three key saves on those power plays to help keep them off the board. Overall, we competed hard and obviously our penalty kill was solid. It was a true road win for us."
Lethbridge enjoyed a total of two minutes and 23 seconds of 5-on-3 play in the first period after two-minute minors to
Kylie Gavelin and
Jolene Kirkpatrick both overlapped a
Nikki Watters-Matthes double minor. But the Cougars killed it all off, as the penalty kill was a perfect 7-for-7 in the win.
The Cougars improve to 8-7-3-1 with the win and remain tied with Manitoba for fourth place in the wild Canada West standings - but they're also just one point out of third place, two points behind second, and three points out of first.
Regina and Lethbridge will finish off the weekend series on Saturday afternoon. Puck drop is set for 1:00 (MST).
NOTES: The shutout for Ross was her third of the 2015-16 season … it was also the seventh of her career, as she moves past Andrea Charanduk and Jackie Simonot for second on the U of R's all-time list and is now just one behind
Jennifer Schmidt's school record of eight.
