Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars fall to Alberta despite MacAuley’s career night

The University of Regina men's hockey team fell 4-1 to the Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton on Friday night.

Rookie goaltender Dawson MacAuley (pictured) was the story for the Cougars in the loss to the second-place Golden Bears, as the former Regina Pat made a career-high 53 saves on 56 shots.

Thomas Carr, Jayden Hart and Jordan Rowley were able to beat MacAuley before Dylan Bredo added an empty netter with less than two minutes to play.

Dillan McCombie replied for the Cougars, scoring his third goal in the last two games off an assist from Ian McNulty

Alberta outshot the Cougars 58-19 on the night, peppering MacAuley with 18 shots in the first period, 19 in the second and 21 in the third. The Golden Bears scored twice in the first period, once midway through the frame and again with less than 30 seconds to go. Regina bounced back in the second thanks to McCombie's marker, but Alberta would add two insurance goals in the final period to ice the game and move into second place in Canada West.

MacAuley's opposition, Luke Siemens, wasn't tested often but was solid when he was, stopping 18 shots as he narrowly missed his third shutout of the season.

The Cougars (5-16-0) will battle the Golden Bears again on Saturday evening, with puck drop scheduled for 6 p.m. local time.
