Dinos score three-set sweep over Cougars

The University of Calgary scored a three-set sweep over the Regina Cougars on Thursday night as the Canada West women's volleyball schedule resumed at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

Calgary took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match with 25-22 and 25-20 wins in the opening two sets, and won the match emphatically in the third. The Dinos reeled off separate 8-2 and 7-1 runs in the final set and cruised to a 25-14 win to clinch their fifth Canada West victory of the season.

The victory edges Calgary closer to Thompson Rivers (5-7) and Mount Royal (5-7) in the Canada West postseason race, as the Dinos (5-8) remain in eighth place in the standings just behind those two teams. The top seven qualify for the conference playoffs.

Calgary's balanced attack saw both Laura McManes and Janna Ogle finish with 10 kills apiece, while Kate Pexman was leading all players with eight kills but went down with what appeared to be a wrist injury midway through the second set and didn't return. Erika Myhre had 31 assists and nine digs for the Dinos, with libero Ali Woolley collecting a team-leading 10 digs.

Jenna Krahn had a team-high eight kills for the Cougars (1-12) and hit .217, while Tori Glynn finished with a match-high five service aces – three of which came on consecutive serves late in the first. Taylor Ungar led all players with 15 digs.

The two teams will finish off the rare Thursday/Friday series tomorrow night at the CKHS. Match time is again scheduled for 6 p.m.
