Cougars defeat Guelph, UQAM to go 2-1 at RBC Classic

The University of Regina's men's basketball team has now won three of its last four games after going 2-1 at the RBC Classic, a non-conference tournament hosted by Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont.
 
The Cougars are now 3-7 this season and will finish off the non-conference schedule next weekend in Lethbridge with games against the Pronghorns and the University of Alberta.
 
Friday – Cougars 83, Guelph 74
A big second half lifted the Cougars to a nice nine-point win over Guelph, as the Cougars outscored the Gryphons by a 47-34 margin in the final 20 minutes to overcome a halftime deficit.
 
Johneil Johnson led the Cougars off the bench with a game-high 17 points while also pulling down eight rebounds and adding three assists and a pair of steals. Alex Igual and Aaron McGowan both had 11 points, while Stephen Shields led all players with 11 rebounds and rookie Carter Millar chipped in with nine points and eight boards in 15 minutes played.
 
Daniel Dooley led Guelph with 13 points.
 
Saturday – Cougars 74, UQAM 65
Igual poured in a game-high 21 points, leading the Cougars to their third consecutive win. Regina enjoyed a 27-17 advantage in the last quarter, securing the win despite going into the fourth trailing the Citadins by one.
 
Brian Ofori had 10 points for the Cougars in the win, while McGowan and Travis Sylvestre each scored nine. Sylvestre also led the Cougars in rebounds (7) and assists (3).
 
Charles Miller led UQAM with 15 points.
 
Sunday – Ryerson 84, Cougars 63
Ryerson pulled away from the Cougars with a big second quarter, outscoring them 28-15 in the period to take a 54-33 lead into the break. And they put away any hopes of a U of R comeback in the third, as the Rams extended their lead to 27 heading into the final quarter.
 
Johnson had another big game for the Cougars, leading the way with 18 points. Matthew Augustine chipped in with 16 points for the U of R.
 
Myles Charvis had 16 points to lead the way offensively for Ryerson, which also had Jovan Leamy (13 points), Ammanuel Diressa (11), and Adam Voll (10) score in double figures.
