The University of Regina's women's basketball team now has 10 consecutive victories to open non-conference play after the Cougars defeated Toronto, Lakehead, and host Alberta at a tournament held at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.
The Cougars will now finish off the non-conference schedule with games against Fraser Valley and UBC next Friday and Saturday in Victoria.Â
Friday - Cougars 71, Toronto 50
Despite missing four players (
Sara Hubenig,
Michaela Kleisinger,
Charlotte Kot, and
Katie Polischuk) representing the U of R and the CIS this weekend at the 3-on-3 FISU World League final in China, the Cougars started out the tournament with a 21-point win over Toronto on Friday afternoon.
Saturday - Cougars 65, Lakehead 64
Lakehead had the U of R's winning streak in serious jeopardy after the Thunderwolves went up 62-54 past the midway mark of the third quarter, but the Cougars held them scoreless over the next four and a half minutes while going on an 11-0 run that gave them their first lead since early in the second quarter.
The Thunderwolves hit a layup at the buzzer after a missed free throw, but it was inconsequential as the Cougars had built up a three-point lead by then.
Three players hit double figures in scoring for the Cougars, including
Kyanna Giles and
Ainsley MacIntyre with 11 points each and
Caitlin Zacharias with 10 off the bench. Giles also led the team in rebounds (8) and assists (4) in the win.
Bridget O'Reilly had 21 points for Lakehead, almost all of which came on her 6-of-13 shooting from three-point range.
Sunday - Cougars 71, Alberta 56
A big run before halftime lifted the Cougars to a 71-56 win over tournament host Alberta on Sunday, as the U of R outscored Alberta by a 24-9 margin in the second quarter and never looked back. At one point, the Cougars were on a 20-2 run that spanned the final few seconds of the first period and the first half of the second.
