Cougars finish non-conference with win over Alberta

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Regina's men's basketball team finished off a tough non-conference schedule at Lethbridge over the weekend, losing to the Pronghorns on Friday but closing out the quick road trip with a fine 74-72 win over Alberta on a buzzer beater by Brian Ofori.

The Cougars, who went 4-8 during non-conference play with all 12 games played away from the friendly confines of the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, will now prepare for their Canada West season openers next weekend. The U of R hosts Victoria on Friday and Saturday with an 8 p.m. start time scheduled for both nights at the CKHS.

Friday – Lethbridge 103, Cougars 90 [box]
Lethbridge led by as many as 25 points late in the third quarter before the Cougars were able to mount a fourth-quarter run to get to within 12 just past the midway point of the final period, but it was too little, too late as the Cougars couldn't find an answer for Elliott Sentance's 39 points for Lethbridge.

Five Cougars hit double figures in scoring, including Ofori and Brandon Tull with 14 points each. Johneil Johnson, Carter Millar, and Travis Sylvestre each came off the bench to score 11.

Saturday – Cougars 74, Alberta 72 [box]
A huge fourth-quarter comeback capped by a buzzer-beating jumper by Ofori lifted the Cougars to a win over Alberta in their final non-conference game of the season. Regina trailed by 12 through three quarters, but a 10-0 run by the Cougars that included three-pointers by Alex Igual and Samuel Hillis, a bucket by Millar, and a pair of free throws by Johnson gave the U of R a late five-point advantage. Alberta battled back to tie the game in the last minute, but Ofori's last-second shot gave the Cougars the win.

Johnson led the Cougars with 13 points, while Igual finished with 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Matthew Augustine added 10 points, while Ofori and Hillis both chipped in with nine.

Mamadou Gueye had a game-high 17 points for Alberta.
