Still without a couple key pieces of the puzzle as
Charlotte Kot and
Kyia Giles remain sidelined with injuries, the No. 2-ranked University of Regina Cougars got their fourth Canada West win of the season on Friday night with a 57-51 road victory over Trinity Western.
Christina McCusker led the Cougars (4-1) in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards for the game's lone double-double.
Kyanna Giles added 11 points and seven rebounds, while
Katie Polischuk hit a pair of triples and finished with eight points.
Jessie Brown had 12 points to lead Trinity Western.
The low-scoring affair saw the two teams separated by no more than eight at any point during the game. Trinity Western led 14-10 after the opening quarter, only to see the Cougars come back and outscore the Spartans 24-15 in the second to take a five-point lead into halftime.
The Spartans briefly went ahead in the third quarter after opening up the second half with three consecutive buckets, but that turned out to be TWU's last lead of the game. The Cougars led the rest of the way, but it wasn't easy – Trinity Western went without a field goal over a span of nearly seven minutes in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars only managed to score seven points during that time to build up their largest lead at eight. TWU brought the deficit down to four with just under a minute to go with a Natalie Carkner triple, but McCusker put the game away for the Cougars with four big free throws in the final seconds of the quarter.
The Cougars will look to take a weekend sweep over Trinity Western on Saturday night. Game time is set for 6:00.
