The University of Regina's women's volleyball team suffered a three-set road loss to Manitoba on Friday night at the Investors Group Athletic Centre in Winnipeg.
After Manitoba hit .355 as a team in a 25-14 first-set win, the Cougars gave the Bisons everything they could handle in the second. Two separate 3-0 runs by the U of R gave the visitors a 12-7 lead and forced a Manitoba timeout, but the Bisons chipped away at the lead and pulled even with three consecutive points of their own following the technical timeout. Manitoba then went on a 7-3 run that gave them two set points at 24-22, and though the Cougars battled back to draw even at 24-24 the Bisons got back-to-back Tori Studler kills to claim a 26-24 win.
The third set wasn't nearly as dramatic, with Manitoba leading from start to finish and taking complete control with a big 9-1 run around the technical timeout. The Bisons' 25-11 win in the third clinched their first Canada West win of the season.
Manitoba (1-2) was led by Studler's 16 kills, while Kearley Abbott added 10 and setter Sydney Booker dished out 38 assists. Libero Caleigh Dobie had 11 digs for Manitoba.
Ashlee Sandiford (pictured) had a team-leading 10 kills for Regina, which drops to 0-3 on the season with the loss. Libero
Taylor Ungar led all players with 16 digs, while the setting duties were split between rookies
Kirstin Greve and
Elizabeth Tooth.
Manitoba and Regina will play a rematch on Saturday afternoon (4:30) in Winnipeg.
