Women’s basketball hosts No. 2 Saskatchewan

Needing a sweep to claim first place in the Pioneer Division, the No. 5-ranked University of Regina's women's basketball team hosts No. 2 Saskatchewan this weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport as the Canada West schedule finishes up.

Both teams are assured of a top-three finish in the Pioneer along with Alberta. Saskatchewan just needs a win on either Friday or Saturday to walk away with first place in the division, while the Cougars need to secure a weekend sweep to claim top spot. A weekend split would give the division title to Saskatchewan and put the Cougars in either second or third place depending on Alberta's result against Calgary on Saturday, while a Saskatchewan sweep would put Alberta in second place and Regina in third.

Regardless of how this weekend plays out, the Cougars have clinched a bye through the first round of the Canada West postseason and home court for the best-of-three conference quarterfinals to begin on Mar. 4 against an opponent to be determined.

Last weekend saw the U of R's 10-game winning streak come to an end on Friday with a 95-83 overtime loss to Calgary despite a 24-point, 17-rebound effort from Alyssia Kajati. The Cougars rebounded with an 83-71 win over the Dinos the following night, but Friday's setback dropped the Cougars two spots in this week's CIS Top Ten.

This weekend will be the final conference games in a U of R uniform for the team's three seniors, including Kajati, Kehlsie Crone, and Sidney Dobner. Kajati will finish as one of the school's all-time leaders in rebounding, as her 589 career rebounds rank behind only Jackie Moore, Chelsea Cassano, and Brittany Read in school history. She also ranks second in the U of R record book in field goal percentage (56.6%) behind Corrin Wersta.

Crone and Dobner have formed the nucleus of the team's backcourt this season. Crone needs just five more points to hit 600 for her career and has also compiled 307 rebounds and 262 assists in her four seasons with the team, while Dobner sat out the previous three seasons at the U of R due to transfer regulations and injury but has stepped right into the team's starting lineup this year and leads the team in both assists and steals.

But while the Cougars will honour the three fifth-year players on Saturday, it's been a fourth-year player that's been the team's statistical leader this season. Charlotte Kot is one of only two Canada West players – Victoria's Jenna Bugiardini is the other – to rank among the conference's top ten in both scoring and rebounding, as she leads the Cougars with averages of 16.1 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.

Saskatchewan features a balanced offence that's capable of hurting the opposition both inside and out. Dalyce Emmerson is shooting 59.3% from the field and averages 14.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Huskies, while scoring leader Laura Dally and Latvian guard Sabine Dukate are both shooting in excess of 40% from three-point range this season.

The two teams will meet at 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at the CKHS.
