Back at home this weekend for the first time in nearly a month, the University of Regina's women's basketball team will look to extend its eight-game winning streak as the Cougars host the University of Victoria this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Both games will tip off at 6 p.m.
CanadaWest.tv WebcastLive StatsSince the Cougars were last at the CKHS in early January, they had a weekend off before reeling off four consecutive road wins – two over UBC the following weekend, then 86-55 and 87-42 over Manitoba last Friday and Saturday. The last win over the Bisons not only clinched a postseason berth for the Cougars for the 21st consecutive year, but also nails down a top-four finish in the Pioneer Division and a bye through to the Canada West quarterfinals.
Charlotte Kot was the team's leading scorer in both wins over Manitoba last weekend, collecting 23 points and seven rebounds on Friday before following that up with a 20-point, seven-rebound effort in Saturday's win. Kot is still ranked among the conference leaders in both scoring and rebounding, as she's seventh in the league scoring race with 15.7 points per game and fifth with an average of 9.0 rebounds per contest.
With
Sidney Dobner unavailable last weekend due to injury, rookie
Avery Pearce (pictured) made her first two Canada West starts and played a season-high 27 minutes on Friday and 20 on Saturday. The rest of the starting five stayed the same, including fifth-year veterans
Kehlsie Crone and
Alyssia Kajati and fourth-year player
Katie Polischuk.
Victoria (7-9) can finish no higher than fifth place in the Pioneer Division, and fifth is where the Vikes enter the weekend – a few percentage points higher than sixth-place Brandon (6-8) and one game up on seventh-place UBC (6-10).
The Vikes' top player is Jenna Bugiardini, who averages 16.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Led by the perimeter shooting of Amira Giannattasio, reserve Brittani Yee, and Kristy Gallagher, Victoria ranks third in Canada West in team three-point percentage (34.5%). After this weekend, the Vikes' only remaining conference games are at home against Brandon on Feb. 19 and Feb. 20.
SERIES NOTES: The all-time series between the two teams is almost dead even, with the Cougars holding a 13-12 advantage in the 25 Canada West games they've played against each other ... including postseason games, the Cougars have defeated Victoria 14 consecutive times in Regina with the Vikes' last road win at the U of R coming back on Nov. 27, 1970.
