The University of Regina's women's volleyball team led 1-0 and 2-1 on Saturday, but weren't able to pull out their first road win of the season after losing in five sets to MacEwan in a Canada West match in Edmonton.
Ultimately, the Cougars couldn't find an answer for MacEwan's Cassidy Kinsella, who had 19 kills and just four errors on 41 attacks to hit .366 for the match. Kinsella also had 14 digs, four blocks, and three aces in the win.
MacEwan jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first set, but the Cougars crawled back and went on a 12-6 run around the technical timeout to take their first lead. A kill by
Tori Glynn gave the Cougars set point at 24-21, but MacEwan got three straight points to square it up – though the Cougars were able to finish from there, getting a
Kyla Payette kill and an
Erika Burns ace to take the opening set 26-24.
MacEwan led from start to finish in a 25-17 win in the second, but the Cougars took control of the third set with a 5-1 run just after the technical timeout and held off the Griffins for a 25-22 victory that saw
Ashlee Sandiford register kills on each of the U of R's final three points.
Though the Cougars had a chance to finish off the match in four, it was MacEwan jumping out of the gates to go up 9-3 early. The Cougars fought back and got it to within 19-17, but the Griffins collected six of the last eight points to take a 25-19 win.
And the deciding set was all MacEwan after the side switch, as the Griffins scored five straight points to go up 12-6 before coasting to a 15-10 match-clinching win.
Besides Kinsella, MacEwan also got nine kills and 12 digs from Kate Rozendaal and eight kills and seven blocks from Jasey Hook. Claire McLoughlin added 47 assists, seven blocks, and six digs, while libero Karly Edgar had 22 digs.
Four players ended up with double-doubles for the Cougars, including Glynn with a team-high 18 kills to go along with 11 digs. Burns (44 assists, 12 digs), Sandiford (11 kills, 12 digs), and
Jenna Krahn (11 kills, 11 digs) also had big nights for the U of R, with libero
Taylor Ungar adding 18 digs.
The Cougars will have a weekend off before finishing off their 2015-16 schedule on the road at Saskatchewan on Feb. 19 and Feb. 20.
NOTES: After moving up to No. 5 on the school's all-time kills list on Friday, Glynn now has 739 in her career and needs just three more to pass Samantha Lawrek for fourth ... Glynn also needs just two more service aces to pass Tiffany Herman for fourth in U of R history ... she will finish second on the school's all-time digs list with 755 and counting.
