The No. 4-seeded University of Regina's women's basketball team kicks off the 2016 CIS Championship on Thursday night against No. 5 Ryerson at the Richard J. Currie Centre on the campus of the University of New Brunswick.

Game time is set for 8 p.m. ADT, which is 5 p.m. Saskatchewan time. Sportsnet's Arash Madani will have the call live on the webcast at www.cis-sic.tv with Canadian women's national team player Alisha Tatham providing analysis.

Thursday's matchup will mark the first time in history that the Cougars and Ryerson have met in the national tournament. Regina finished the Canada West schedule with a 17-3 record and are 3-1 in the postseason, while Ryerson was 16-3 in the regular schedule before winning three straight games to claim the Ontario University Sport championship.

"Ryerson is a very talented team that will give us issues with their ability to create off the bounce and their outstanding post play," Cougars head coach Dave Taylor said. "Transition defence will be critical for us tonight, and as with all 4/5 matchups I expect a very close and hard-fought game."

Second-team All-Canadian forward Charlotte Kot leads the Cougars in scoring and rebounding this year, while her front-court companion Alyssia Kajati also earning Canada West all-star honours in her final season at the U of R. Fifth-year veterans Kehlsie Crone and Sidney Dobner and three-point threat Katie Polischuk round out the team's starting five, with Christina McCusker and Sara Hubenig leading the way off the bench.

Ryerson boasts this season's CIS Player of the Year, as Keneca Pingue-Giles took home the award at Wednesday night's All-Canadian Celebration at the Fredericton Playhouse. Pingue-Giles is the older sister of Sisler High School (Winnipeg, Man.) twins Kyanna Giles and Kyia Giles, who have committed to the Cougars for next season. Besides Pingue-Giles, Ryerson also gets major contributions from second-year post Sofia Paska, who was named an OUA first-team all-star.

The winner of the Regina/Ryerson quarterfinal will move on to face either No. 1-seeded McGill or host New Brunswick in Saturday's semifinals, while the loser will play on the consolation side on Friday.

NOTES: The Cougars are playing in their 17th CIS Championship … entering tonight, they have an all-time record of 11-5 in CIS quarterfinal games … Regina has qualified for the CIS Championship in seven of Taylor's 10 seasons as the program's head coach.
