Fresh off a three-game win over Winnipeg in a Canada West play-in series, the University of Regina's men's basketball team will have a short turnaround this week as the Cougars head to Kamloops, B.C. to take on Thompson Rivers in a conference quarterfinal series.

The series win over Winnipeg came in dramatic fashion, with the Cougars having to overcome a Game 1 loss and a 15-point second-half deficit in Game 2 to come back for the win. They ended up taking the second game by a 67-64 score, then followed that up with a 75-69 win in Game 3 to clinch the series.

And it'll likely be a tired Regina team that's heading to Kamloops. The Cougars will only have three days of rest between the conclusion of the Winnipeg series and the start of this one, as the quarterfinal series at Thompson Rivers starts Thursday. Head coach Steve Burrows went with what was essentially a seven-man rotation against the Wesmen, with Alex Igual, Travis Sylvestre, Will Tallman, Brandon Tull, and Jonathan Tull forming the starting five and Aaron McGowan and Brian Ofori both contributing significantly off the bench. Mike Malecha and Samuel Hillis also saw playing time at various points in all three games.

Thompson Rivers isn't exactly a known commodity to the Cougars. The WolfPack won the Explorer Division with a 16-4 record and have been hanging around the CIS Top Ten for much of the year, but the two only have one common opponent – TRU took out Trinity Western by a 74-48 score in an October non-conference game, and the Cougars defeated Trinity Western 95-72 and 95-60 in a pair of Canada West games two months ago.

"They're a very talented team and obviously very efficient offensively and shoot the ball well," Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said. "We'll have to be extremely disciplined defensively this weekend, and they've got good size so we'll have to battle hard on the glass."

Thompson Rivers might just have the best front court in the entire conference between Josh Wolfram and Volodymyr Iegorov. And not only do they have size – Wolfram is 6-10 and 225 lbs. while Iegorov checks in at 6-7 and 235 lbs. – but they can hurt you from inside or out, as they've both hit 32 three-pointers this season with Wolfram shooting 36.8% from the perimeter and Iegorov hitting 41.6% from downtown. And both rank in the conference's top five in scoring, with Wolfram at 19.0 points per game and Iegorov just behind with an average of 18.4 points per contest. Not surprisingly, they're also the team's leading rebounders with Wolfram also ranking fifth in Canada West with 9.6 rebounds per game.

Luke Morris and Reese Pribilsky are also significant contributors for TRU, with Pribilsky – younger brother of TRU assistant coach Kevin Pribilsky – averaging 13.5 points per game and Morris at 12.4 points per game.

All three games will tip off at 9 p.m. Saskatchewan time and will be webcast live at www.canadawest.tv.

NOTES: Technically the 2/7 series in terms of Canada West seeding, Regina/TRU is one of four conference quarterfinals happening this weekend ... the other series are #1 Calgary against #9 Alberta, #3 UBC against #6 Lethbridge, and #4 Manitoba against #5 Fraser Valley ... the winners of the four quarterfinal series move on to the Canada West Final Four next weekend, which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed.
