The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won the opening set at Brandon, but the Bobcats came back to win three straight sets and take the match by a 3-1 score on Thursday afternoon in a Canada West match at BU's Healthy Living Centre.
Brandon took a 16-13 lead into the technical timeout in the first set, but the Cougars then reeled off a 10-2 run featuring three
Ashlee Sandiford kills to turn what had been a three-point deficit into a five-point lead at 23-18. Brandon took the next four points to cut Regina's lead to one, but
Kathleen Bruce then got a kill and an ace on back-to-back plays to give the Cougars their fourth consecutive set dating back to Saturday's 3-2 win over Mount Royal.
But the Cougars (1-12) didn't have an answer for Brandon's Courtney Roberts. The fourth-year middle had a match-high 19 kills, including seven kills in the second set alone which Brandon won by a 25-18 score. The Bobcats edged Regina by a 25-23 score in the third, then Roberts collected another seven kills in the fourth set as Brandon (3-10) took the match with a 25-20 win.
Roberts had just three errors on 27 attacks, giving her a match-high .593 hitting percentage while tying teammate Danielle Larocque for the match lead with six blocks. Nikala Majewski added 16 kills and eight digs for Brandon, while Mary Thomson had 33 assists and libero Gillian Leech led all players with 17 digs.
Ashlee Sandiford (11 kills, 10 digs) and
Diana Lumbala (10 kills, 15 digs) both had double-doubles for Regina, while
Kathleen Bruce also hit double digits with 10 kills.
Jenna Krahn was just behind with nine kills and 11 digs, while setter
Kirstin Greve had 33 assists in the loss.
The two teams will meet again in Brandon on Friday night (6:00).
