Up one spot to No. 3 in the nation this week after a road sweep over UBC Okanagan, the University of Regina's women's basketball team plays at home for the first time in 2017 this weekend with games against Manitoba on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Â
The Cougars cruised to two big wins last weekend over the Heat, winning 76-38 on Friday night before coming up with an 80-60 victory on Saturday. The two wins bump the U of R's Canada West record to 8-2 on the season, elevating the Cougars into a tie with UBC for third place in the conference standings.
Â
Regina head coach
Dave Taylor has gone with four different starting lineups in seven games since
Charlotte Kot's season-ending injury in November.
Katie Polischuk is the only Cougar to have started all 10 Canada West games, though
Christina McCusker and rookie
Kyanna Giles have both started nine.
Avery Pearce and
Sara Hubenig were the other two starters in both wins last weekend at UBC Okanagan.
Â
Polischuk continues to build on her impressive career totals and with 964 points scored in 85 conference games played entering this weekend, now needs just 36 more to hit 1000. She's already the school's all-time leader with 211 career three-pointers made. That total is currently fourth in Canada West history, but she only needs five more to pass former Simon Fraser sharpshooter Dani Langford for third.
Â
Taylor isn't shy about going to his bench. Beyond the assumed starting five of Giles, Hubenig, McCusker, Pearce, and Polischuk, the Cougars have four players averaging in excess of 10 minutes played per game (
Michaela Kleisinger,
Ainsley MacIntyre,
Britton Belyk, and
Angela Bongomin) and two more that average over eight minutes per contest (
Caitlin Zacharias and
Alexi Rowden).
Â
Manitoba comes into the weekend with a 1-9 conference record and the Bisons have dropped six consecutive games since defeating Thompson Rivers at home on Nov. 12 for their lone win of the season. Manitoba's top player is from Regina, as second-year guard Nicole Konieczny – a Winston Knoll grad – leads the team in scoring (14.2 points per game), rebounding (7.9 per game), and steals (20). Taylor Randall also scores in double figures for the Bisons with an average of 10.1 points per game, while Emma Thompson scores 9.8 per contest.
Â
The two teams will tip off at 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday at the CKHS.
Â
NOTES: The Cougars have won 21 consecutive games over Manitoba ... the Bisons' last win in the series was back on Nov. 30, 2007 in Regina ... the Cougars have an 89-81 advantage in the 170 regular season games played between the two teams.
