The University of Regina's women's basketball team hosts Calgary this Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Both games will tip off at 6 p.m.
Â
The Cougars (12-2) pushed their winning streak to six games last weekend with a pair of road wins over Brandon, defeating the Bobcats by a 77-40 score on Friday and following that up with a 75-55 win on Saturday.
Katie Polischuk and
Sara Hubenig carried the offence in Friday's win with 22 points and 20 points, respectively, while rookie guard
Kyanna Giles piled up a game-high 25 points on Saturday.
Â
Regina, which moved up one spot to No. 2 in this week's U SPORTS Top Ten thanks to McMaster's home loss to York, has the third-best record in Canada West but the second-highest RPI behind Saskatchewan.
Â
After hitting 1000 career points two weekends ago, Polischuk is poised to move up the school's all-time scoring list as she's now only 10 points behind Chelsea Cassano and Deanne Shmyr for ninth in program history and 33 behind Lindsay Ledingham for eighth. Polischuk averages a team-leading 16.1 points per game and is second in Canada West with 40 three-pointers this season, while Giles leads all rookies in the conference with an average of 12.6 points per game.
Â
Cougars head coach
Dave Taylor has tinkered with his starting lineup much of the season, but went with Hubenig,
Avery Pearce, and
Christina McCusker along with Polischuk and Giles in both of last weekend's games at Brandon.
Michaela Kleisinger,
Ainsley MacIntyre,
Britton Belyk,
Kyia Giles,
Angela Bongomin,
Caitlin Zacharias, and
Alexi Rowden all played significant roles off the bench last weekend and that's been a theme throughout the season, as all 11 active players on the U of R roster average in excess of nine minutes played per contest.
Â
Calgary comes into the weekend with an 8-6 record, but are mired in a three-game losing skid after a loss to Fraser Valley two weekends ago and two setbacks to Saskatchewan last weekend. Brianna Ghali averages nearly a double-double per game for the Dinos as she leads Calgary in both points per game (14.1) and rebounds per game (9.6). Bobbi Jo Colburn, a rookie out of McMath Secondary in Richmond, B.C., averages 10.6 points per game.
Â
NOTES: Counting conference games only, Regina and Calgary will play for the 30th and 31st times this weekend ... the Cougars have a 22-9 edge over the Dinos and have won 12 of the last 13 Canada West games between the two teams dating back to the 2008-09 season.
