Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cougars’ shootout luck runs out as MRU takes split

The University of Regina men's hockey team went to a shootout for the second consecutive night against Mount Royal University, but fell 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars mounted a big comeback to force the extra frames, but ultimately lost 4-3 in a shootout that saw seven skaters from each team take a 1-on-1 crack at the opposing goaltender.

Cody Fowlie (pictured) had two goals for the Cougars, who drop to 1-2-1 after this weekend's split. Tristan Frei and Tyler King also had goals in regulation, while Ian McNulty and Brody Luhning picked up two assists each.

Bradley Kennedy had two goals for MRU, making it four on the weekend. Kord Pankewicz and Hunter Zandee also tallied.

Mount Royal carried a 3-1 lead into the third period but the Cougars rattled off three powerplay goals in the frame to force overtime at 4-4. After ten minutes of overtime that solved nothing, the two teams went back to a shootout.

After McNulty, King and Isaac Schacher scored in the shootout, MRU took a 4-3 lead leaving Colton Sparrow with a chance to draw Regina even again. His wrist shot rang off the post as MRU picked up its first win of the 2017-18 Canada West campaign.

The Cougars are on the road again next weekend, matching up with the 1-3-0 UBC Thunderbirds. UBC won their season opener on the road with a 6-4 score, but lost the next night to Manitoba before being swept by Calgary 6-1 and 7-0 this weekend.
