SATURDAY: vs. UBC Okanagan, 12:00 p.m., U of R Field
SUNDAY: vs. Thompson Rivers, 12:00 p.m., U of R Field
The University of Regina women's soccer team will play its first home games of the 2017 Canada West season this weekend, as UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers University are in town to take on the Cougars.
Regina (0-0-2) earned two points last weekend, opening the season with a 0-0 tie against Manitoba on Friday night, and playing Winnipeg to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.
Savannah Williams made eight saves on Friday for her second career shutout and stopped seven more shots against the Wesmen.
UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers both enter the weekend searching for their first points of the season, as the Heat fell 3-0 to MacEwan and 2-1 to UNBC last weekend. Thompson Rivers dropped contests against those same teams, losing 3-0 to UNBC and 7-2 to MacEwan.
The Front Line
Rookie forward
Sally Bachmann scored the Cougars' first goal of the 2017 campaign, soaring in to head home a cross off a corner kick from
Brianna Wright. Striker
Sydney Langen leads the team with four shots, while
Jet Davies has chipped in with three.
The Win Column
With all three teams searching for their first win of the season, the offensive zone will be a key factor. Regina and UBCO have each found the net once this season, while TRU scored twice in a loss to MacEwan. The Wolfpack are last in Canada West with just five shots while Regina has tallied 20 and the Heat have 18.
The Historical Side
The Cougars have matched up with UBC Okanagan and Thompson Rivers only once each in the past, winning both games. The Cougars visited the Wolfpack on Oct. 22 last season, exploding for five goals in a 5-1 victory. Regina travelled to Kelowna the following afternoon and took a 1-0 win over the Heat on a late goal from Wright.
