The University of Regina women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night, earning a critical three points in a crowded Prairie Division playoff race.
Kirsten Finley and Sydney Langen scored goals for the Cougars, who improve to 3-9-1 with the win. Regina has a three-point cushion on Lethbridge for the final playoff spot in the division, and also holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Pronghorns.
The Cougars will close the regular season tomorrow with an evening match against the Manitoba Bisons, while Lethbridge is set to play Alberta and Mount Royal this weekend.
Friday's contest was scoreless until the 77th minute, when Finley netted her first of the season. Langen added an insurance marker just two minutes later for her first of the campaign as the Cougars eliminated the Wesmen from playoff contention.
"We talked at half that we needed a good 45 minutes, we knew we needed to get three points today and to just stick with what we were doing," head coach Bob Maltman said. "For us to get those (goals) going in, it's a bit of a reward for the mentality of our team. They haven't really got down on themselves or given up. They knew it was coming."
Kylie Bolton earned the clean sheet for Regina, stopping three shots. Madison Fordyce made 11 saves for the Wesmen as the Cougars unleashed a season-high 19 shots. Regina also had nine corner kicks compared to five from Winnipeg.
The Cougars will face off against Manitoba on Saturday night, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. local time. A win will clinch a playoff berth for Regina, while a draw or loss will mean the Cougars will have to wait and see how Lethbridge fares.
