Greishe Clerjuste and both Hillis brothers had big nights in the University of Regina's 100-82 road win over Brandon on Friday night in a Canada West men's basketball game at the Healthy Living Centre on the BU campus.
Â
Clerjuste and
Benjamin Hillis both tied for the team lead with 19 points, but it was fourth-year guard
Samuel Hillis (pictured) that had the most impressive night of the bunch. Hillis tied his career high with 17 points, set a new career high with 13 rebounds, and also added six assists and five steals for the Cougars.
Â
"Sam's did a great job rebounding the basketball tonight and his activity on both ends was outstanding," Cougars head coach
Steve Burrows said. "I thought for the most part we did what we talked about for the week, but we had some lapses where they capitalized quickly so we'll look to clean that up tomorrow. I thought it was a solid road game by our guys tonight."
Â
Two other Cougars hit double figures in scoring.
Brayden Kuski came off the bench to score 13, while
Carter Millar had 12 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Â
Troy Grant had a team-leading 17 points for Brandon, which falls to 1-4 with the loss.
Â
After a back-and-forth first quarter which featured six lead changes, the Cougars scored the first seven points of the second to build up a double-digit lead. They led 45-31 at the half, then reeled off a 13-2 run punctuated by a
Nigel Warden three-point play that put them up by 24.
Â
Brandon scored the last 13 points of the third quarter to grab some momentum, but that was as close as the Bobcats would come. The Cougars opened the fourth with a bucket by Millar and a triple by Clerjuste, and led by at least 20 points for most of the stretch run.
Â
The Cougars and Brandon will meet again on Saturday night (7:00).
