Fewer than 24 hours after the University of Regina's women's volleyball took a three-set road sweep over Mount Royal, it was MRU's turn to put up a quick win with a straight-sets victory on Saturday night at Kenyon Court in Calgary.
Mount Royal took the first two sets by twin 25-21 scores, but it looked as if the Cougars would extend the match after taking a 16-10 lead at the third set technical timeout. But Mount Royal got five straight points with Cassidy Kitchen serving to get back into it, and on MRU's second match point a kill by Carly Davies clinched the victory.
Kitchen had 16 kills and 10 digs to notch a double-double for Mount Royal, while Davies finished with eight kills and nine digs and setter Quinn Pelland collected 28 assists. Mount Royal moves back up to .500 for the season as the western Cougars head into the December break with a 6-6 conference record.
Jessica Lerminiaux and
Ashlee Sandiford led Regina with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively, while
Taylor Ungar led all players with 17 digs.
Regina finishes the first half of the conference schedule in a three-way tie for seventh in the Canada West standings with a 5-7 record. They'll head to Edmonton to compete in the New Year's Classic non-conference tournament starting on Dec. 28, and will return to conference play on Jan. 4 and Jan. 5 against the Alberta Pandas.
