Cougars win all three matches at New Year's Classic

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team won all three of its matches over the weekend at the New Year's Classic non-conference tournament in Edmonton.

The Cougars started out the weekend by outlasting tournament host Alberta for a five-set win on Friday night. They jumped out to a two-set lead over the No. 4-ranked Pandas with 25-20 and 26-24 wins to start the match, and after Alberta came back to win the next two the Cougars were able to rally with a 15-6 victory in the deciding set to claim the match.

Regina then dominated MacEwan on Saturday, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first set over the Griffins and winning in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-14, and 25-19.

The Cougars finished off the tournament with another five-set win over a ranked team, this time against No. 2-ranked Calgary. The Cougars forced a deciding set with a 25-18 win in the fourth, then held off the Dinos for a 16-14 victory in the fifth that gave them their third victory in as many days.

"I feel that our whole team benefited from the last three days of competition and practice," Cougars head coach Melanie Sanford said. "It's a tricky time of the season and being able to attend this tournament allowed us to regain our rhythm. Our wins were a direct result of playing as a team, finding solutions, and performing when needed."

The Cougars will resume Canada West play next weekend against Alberta in Regina. Besides Friday's match in Edmonton, the two teams also met in late September in non-conference play with that match also going the distance. Alberta won that match, which was part of the University of Regina Invitational.

The Cougars will host the Pandas at 7:00 PM on both Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
