The University of Regina women's hockey team fell 2-1 to the Alberta Pandas in Game 1 of a Canada West quarterfinal on Friday night.
The Cougars went on a late run, as Jaycee Magwood scored with just over a minute left, but Alberta didn't allow the equalizer and was able to hang on for the Game 1 win.
Hanna Olenyk scored late in the first period and Alex Poznikoff scored near the end of the second for the No. 2-ranked Pandas.
Kirsten Chamberlin made 14 saves for the win in net, including two stops on Jordan Kulbida in the first period on a two-on-one rush. Jane Kish stopped 19 shots for the Cougars.
Olenyk got Alberta on the board with a low shot under the pad of Kish, and Poznikoff gave Alberta some insurance on a shot from the slot. Magwood drew the Cougars within a goal with some quick hands on a rebound beside the net, but Chamberlin and the Pandas turned Regina aside for the remainder of the game.
The Cougars will look to force a Game 3 with a Saturday-night matchup against Alberta at 6:00 p.m. local time at the Clare Drake Arena.
