Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars pull out five-set road win over Saskatchewan

The University of Regina's women's volleyball team fell behind 1-0 and 2-1 in a Canada West match at Saskatchewan on Friday night, but came away with a 15-11 win in the fifth and deciding set to take the win over the Huskies.

Regina twice answered Saskatchewan set victories emphatically, starting with a 25-16 win in the second set for the Cougars following the home side's 25-20 opening-set win. It was a similar story in the third and fourth, with Saskatchewan edging the Cougars 25-23 in the third but Regina responding with a 25-17 win in the fourth to send the match to a deciding set.

In the fifth, the Cougars took control after the two teams were deadlocked at 11-11. They scored each of the next four points, getting the match clincher when Ashlee Sandiford unleashed an absolute bomb from the left side to lock away the U of R's seventh win of the Canada West schedule.

Sandiford tied for the match lead with 16 kills and also piled up 16 digs for the Cougars, while Satomi Togawa was up to her usual tricks as the third-year setter was all over the scoresheet with 43 assists, 21 digs, five kills, and three aces. Diana Lumbala added 11 kills, eight kills, and five blocks while Jessica Lerminiaux had 10 kills and 14 digs and Brooklyn Reynolds finished with seven kills, seven aces, and seven blocks.

Emily Koshinsky and Taylor Annala led Saskatchewan with 16 and 14 kills, respectively.

The Cougars improve to 7-8 on the season with the win and will go for the weekend sweep over Saskatchewan on Saturday night. Match time is again set for 6:00 in Saskatoon.

NOTES: Reynolds' total of seven aces is the second most ever registered by a U of R player in a Canada West game, trailing only Tory Glynn's eight that she put up against Calgary back in November of 2013.
