The University of Regina's men's basketball team went 1-2 on its Ontario road swing, opening up the weekend with losses to Wilfrid Laurier and McMaster before closing out the trip with a 93-87 win over York on Saturday.
The Cougars led by 25 at one point in the first half against York and by 18 well into the fourth quarter, but the Lions used a late 11-0 run to make the score 85-80 with just over two minutes to go. But that was as close as York would come, with a three-pointer by
Benjamin Hillis serving as a dagger that put the Cougars back up by 10 with 39 seconds to play.
Carter Millar led the Cougars in both scoring and rebounding in the York win, finishing with 18 points and eight rebounds. Hillis,
Greishe Clerjuste, and
Nick Barnard also hit double figures in scoring with 15, 12, and 10 points, respectively.
The U of R started out the trip with an 88-81 loss to Wilfrid Laurier.
Brayden Kuski hit four threes and finished with a team-leading 22 points while Miller added 14,
Samuel Hillis scored 13, and
Nigel Warden ended up with 12.
In the second game of the trip, the Cougars fell 100-88 to McMaster. Millar had a team-high 21 points and tied Warden for the team lead with seven rebounds, while both
Samuel Hillis and
Josiah Thomas chipped in offensively with 15 points and Warden scored 10.
The Cougars will make their second consecutive trip to Ontario next weekend to participate in the Tindall Invitational Tournament in Kingston. They'll square off against Ottawa on Friday, host Queen's on Saturday, and Memorial on Sunday.
After next weekend, the Cougars will prepare for their Canada West openers at home against UBC on Nov. 1 and Nov. 2.
