Jaycee Magwood and
Jenna Merk's shootout goals led the University of Regina women's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over the visiting UBC Thunderbirds at The Co-operators Centre in a Saturday afternoon matchup.
Â
Jane Kish was excellent in her first action of the season, making 29 saves for the Cougars who are now 1-4-1-0. Tory Micklash stopped 22 shots for UBC (2-3-0-1).
Â
Both teams' specialty team units were put to the test throughout the contest as UBC had 22 minutes in penalties, and Regina had 20.
Â
UBC opened up the scoring three-and-a-half minutes into the second period. Hannah Clayton-Carroll split the Cougars defence and deked past Kish, put it on her backhand and buried it into the back of the net. Clayton-Carroll scored her second goal of the night minutes later on the powerplay, receiving a pass from Mathea Fischer before firing it by a sliding Kish's glove.
Â
Elise Endicott got the Cougars on the scoreboard with a shorthanded, unassisted goal midway through the second period. Endicott battled a Thunderbird defender in the Cougars zone and came away with the puck. The fourth-year forward rushed up the left sideboard into the UBC zone and fired a quick wrist shot from the left face-off dot across Micklash's body to beat her glove side.
Â
Jordan Kulbida scored a powerplay goal early in the third, off an assist from
Lilla Carpenter-Boesch that Kulbida snapped into the back of the net for her first of the season.
Â
Both teams could not solve the opposing goaltender throughout the rest of the third period or two overtime frames, forcing a shootout.
Â
Fischer was the first shooter in the shootout and beat Kish with a backhand shot glove side. Carpenter-Boesch shot for Regina and Chanreet Basi second for UBC; both were unable to capitalize. Magwood was the home team's second shooter and scored with a quick wrist shot on Micklish to even it up before Tiffany Chiu was stopped by Kish.
Â
Merk shot third for the Cougars and had the opportunity to close out the game. Merk came down the ice slowly, deked out Micklash and put the puck on her backhand before lifting it into the back of the net to cement the Cougars victory.
Â
The Cougars will be on the road next weekend, with a visit to Calgary to take on Mount Royal University. UBC will return to home ice to battle against the Manitoba Bisons.
