FRIDAY: Cougars. vs. Victoria, 2:00 p.m., Jasper Place Bowl (Edmonton, Alta.)
The University of Regina women's soccer team is all set for a Canada West Play-In game this weekend, as the Cougars will face off against the Victoria Vikes in Edmonton.
The Cougars and Vikes will play a single-game elimination match for a berth in a Canada West quarterfinal against MacEwan on Sunday afternoon.
The neutral site game will be hosted by Grant MacEwan University, which finished first in Canada West's Prairie Division.
The Cougars
Regina finished the regular season in fifth place in the Prairie Division with a 3-8-3 record. The Cougars enter the weekend on a four-game slide, having falling twice to Saskatchewan and against Alberta and MacEwan last weekend.
The leading scorer for the Cougars in the regular season was veteran
Sydney Langen, who registered four goals and an assist in conference play. Rookie striker
Olivia Gables also had four goals for the Cougars, while
Kirsten Finley and
Kyra Vibert chipped in with two apiece. Vibert (pictured) also had a team-high three assists.
Kylie Bolton and
Savannah Williams split time in the Cougar goal, with Bolton making nine appearances and Williams starting five games. Bolton had a .770 save percentage while Williams sported a .761.
The Opposition
Victoria placed fourth in the Pacific Division with an 8-3-3 record in the regular season. The Vikes won their final three regular season games, defeating UBC, UNBC, and fifth-ranked Calgary.
Kiara Kilbey led the Vikes in goals and points, scoring five goals and setting up two more. Trinity Kettyls had four goals, with Rachel Baird and Nikki Virk adding three each.
Puck Louwes played all 14 games in net for Victoria, finishing third in the conference with a .857 save percentage and fourth with an impressive six shutouts.
The Matchup
The Cougars and Vikes met for a regular-season contest back on Sept. 21, in a match hosted by Victoria. Finley found the net for the Cougars and Natalie Cavallin replied late for the Vikes, as the two teams worked a 1-1 draw in the evening matchup.
