ABOUT REGINA
The Cougars finished first in the Canada West standings with a 17-3 record, but ended up with the No. 3 seed in the Canada West postseason based on RPI. Regina is led by third-year guard
Kyanna Giles, who averages a team-high 18.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game through the conference schedule.
Carolina Goncalves and newcomer
Macaela Crone also average in double figures in scoring for the Cougars, with Crone also second on the team in rebounds (7.9 per game) and second in the entire conference in field goal percentage (56.3).
ABOUT VICTORIA
The Vikes entered the Canada West postseason as the No. 7 seed after going through conference play with a 12-8 record which included a home win over the Cougars just last month thanks to a buzzer beater by fourth-year forward Katie Langdon. Victoria advanced to this weekend's quarterfinals with an 81-60 home win over Fraser Valley last Friday in a play-in game which featured a 27-point performance by fifth-year guard Amira Giannattasio. Giannattasio will undoubtedly be the key to Regina's defensive game plan, as she was one of just two Canada West players to average in excess of 20 points per game during conference play.
COUGARS/VIKES SERIES
This weekend will mark the fourth time in the past nine years that the Cougars have hosted Victoria in a best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series, as the two teams also clashed in 2011, 2013, and 2014. The Cougars won all three of those series in two straight games and are 9-3 against Victoria in all 12 of their postseason games against the Vikes. The teams also met in the 1998 CIAU Championship semifinals in Thunder Bay (Victoria won 70-63), the 2003 Canada West quarterfinals in Victoria (Victoria won in three games), the 2011 CIS West Regional semifinal in Regina (Cougars won 83-73), and the 2017 U SPORTS Championship consolation semifinals in Victoria (Cougars won 78-64).
Counting conference games only, Regina has an 18-13 advantage over the Vikes.
THE BRACKET
The four winning teams from last weekend's play-in round were the Vikes, No. 6 Lethbridge, No. 9 UNBC, and No. 12 Winnipeg. Winnipeg plays top-seeded Saskatchewan this weekend, UNBC travels to face No. 2 Calgary, and Lethbridge will square off against No. 3 Alberta.
The winner of the Regina/Victoria series will meet the winner of the Calgary/UNBC series in the Canada West semifinals next weekend. The higher seed will host, so it'll be at Calgary if the Dinos win their quarterfinal or at Regina or Victoria if UNBC pulls off an upset.
