ABOUT REGINA
The Cougars swept Victoria by scores of 71-51 and 81-60 last weekend in Regina, putting them into the Canada West semifinals for the 11th time in the past 12 seasons. But it'll be a new challenge for the Cougars this year, as they're on the road for a best-of-three Canada West semifinal series for the first time in program history. Now in his 13th season as head coach,
Dave Taylor's usual nine-player rotation features starters
Michaela Kleisinger,
Kyia Giles,
Macaela Crone,
Kyanna Giles, and
Christina McCusker with
Angela Bongomin,
Carolina Goncalves,
Avery Pearce, and
Faith Reid featured heavily off the bench.
ABOUT CALGARY
The Dinos opened the season with a pair of home losses to Regina, but earned the No. 2 seed in the Canada West postseason after winning 17 of their next 18 conference games. Calgary dominated its quarterfinal series last weekend, taking out No. 9-seeded UNBC by scores of 81-58 and 92-55. The Dinos are led by fourth-year veteran Erin McIntosh, who led the team in scoring (15.4 points per game) and rebounding (6.8 per game) during the conference schedule.
COUGARS/DINOS SERIES
Calgary and Regina are meeting in the Canada West semifinals for the second consecutive year. Last year's series in Regina featured two tight games, with the Cougars coming out on the winning side of 61-58 and 66-60 scores. It's the third time in the past four years the two teams have met in the playoffs, as the Cougars also took out Calgary in two straight games in the 2016 conference quarterfinals.
Coming into the weekend, the Dinos and the Cougars have met only twice in the postseason in Calgary. Those two games happened in back-to-back years, with Calgary winning 75-66 in the quarterfinals at the 2012 CIS Championship and the Cougars winning 53-37 the following year to claim the 2013 Canada West title.
THE BRACKET
Regina, Calgary, No. 1 seed Saskatchewan, and No. 6 seed Lethbridge are the only four teams still standing in the Canada West postseason. Saskatchewan won 84-75 and 102-56 over Winnipeg last weekend, while Lethbridge headed up to Edmonton and promptly dispatched the No. 4-seeded Alberta Pandas in two straight games by scores of 90-66 and 67-60.
The winners of the two semifinal series will earn an automatic berth to the 2019 U SPORTS Championship, which will be hosted two weekends from now by Ryerson University in Toronto.
