ABOUT REGINA
The Cougars started out the postseason two weekends ago with a two-game sweep over Victoria in the Canada West quarterfinals, then hit the road last weekend and registered another two-game sweep over Calgary in the conference semifinals with 72-58 and 82-65 victories over the Dinos. The series win, which assured Regina of a nationals berth for the fourth straight year, the 16th time in the past 22 seasons, and the 20th time in history, also extended the Cougars' winning streak to 12 games as they haven't lost since dropping a 70-69 road decision to Victoria back on Jan. 5.
ABOUT SASKATCHEWAN
Owner of the No. 1 seed in the Canada West postseason, Saskatchewan has also rolled through the postseason with four consecutive wins. The Huskies took 84-75 and 102-56 home wins over Winnipeg in the quarterfinals before ending Lethbridge's season with 74-62 and 78-72 wins over the Pronghorns last weekend in the semifinals. Saskatchewan, which will compete in the U SPORTS Women's Final 8 for the sixth consecutive season, is led by Canada West Player of the Year and first-team all-star Sabine Dukate.
COUGARS, HUSKIES IN THE TITLE GAME
Friday's game will mark the fourth consecutive year featuring the two teams from the Land of the Living Skies. The Cougars will be looking to buck a trend that has seen the home team hold court in the four previous matchups, with Saskatchewan winning the conference banner in 2011, 2016, and 2017 in Saskatoon and the Cougars replying with a win last year in Regina.
EARLIER THIS YEAR
The two teams closed out the conference schedule against each other in Regina in early February. The Cougars took both ends of that doubleheader, erasing a 16-point second-half lead in an 82-76 win on Feb. 1 and following that up with a 78-64 victory the following night. They also played a non-conference game in Regina in October – Saskatchewan took that one by an 80-73 count.
AROUND THE COUNTRY
Regina, Saskatchewan, Ottawa, and tournament host Ryerson have all officially locked down berths to next weekend's U SPORTS Women's Final 8 in Toronto. The second OUA berth will go to the winner of Thursday night's Carleton/McMaster semifinal, while the AUS starts its postseason on Friday and the RSEQ berth will go to the winner of the Concordia/Laval game on Saturday. The seven automatic qualifiers will be joined by one wildcard team, which will be announced Sunday night.
